2.The ‘10-second one-legged stance’ test can potentially lead to a person’s fall & even death from such fall.

This very safe and rapid test published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine earlier this year can be safely self applied at home in order to assess static balance and therefore, has clinical application. The study was conducted by a group of investigators from Brazil, UK, USA, Finland and Australia.
The study followed 1,702 men and women for approximately 7 years, and it found a direct correlation between one’s ability to stand for 10 seconds on one leg and all-cause mortality for individuals older than 40 years of age.
The advantages of the 10s OLS test include that it is simple and it provides rapid, safe and objective feedback for the patient and health care providers regarding static balance.
It can easily be incorporated into one’s daily routine and provides useful information regarding mortality risk in middle-aged and older men and women.
THE TEST:
Review the disclaimer above and be safe.
Proceed to stand on one leg, while timing it for a full 10 seconds.
Repeat with the other leg.
You may repeat each attempt up to 3 times for your final result.
THE RESULTS:
If you succeeded, congratulations!
If you failed to maintain balance for 10 seconds long, don’t feel bad. You are not doomed. But you learn. And now you have the opportunity, a second chance, to improve and correct the factors at play.
The advisable next step is to consult with one of your doctors, and to continue safely testing yourself daily.
Stay tuned.
