Numb Feet. There are many causes for the diminished or complete loss of sensation anywhere in the body. Diabetes is the most prevalent. Regardless of which body part it affects, it is extremely disrupting to your health and detrimental to your safety, but no body part is affected more commonly than your feet.
Consequences can be life threatening. At first glance, the idea of numb feet doesn’t sound very menacing, but that is the most common misconception. Numb feet can easily get injured without notice. And therefore remain untreated for far too long. Even an untreated foot blister, on feet that are numb, can easily escalate to a serious infection and even lead to an amputation.
Your feet inform your balance. Your feet are a major source of environmental information that causes you to make adjustments to everything you do. Consider that, should you not have numb feet, you’d be able to tell what type of surface you are walking on (sand, grass, pavement etc) even with shoes on. And if the ground is leveled or not and in which direction!
It is hard NOT to fall with numb feet. Your feet, from the skin to the nerve endings on every joint and the tension on its tendons, muscles, and ligaments inform your spinal cord and your brain of how you are positioned or moving on a given surface and your body is then able to maintain itself in equilibrium, avoiding falls!
1. So, if you have numb feet, even a little bit... Never [EVER] walk barefoot. Wear soft and seamless socks that fit well. Wear comfortable closed up shoes or boots that fit well. No slippers, flip-flops, or high heels.
2. Inspect your feet every night before going to bed. Remove shoes and socks.
3. Every single night take a good look at your feet. And if you don’t have good enough eyesight, have your spouse, relative, friend or neighbor take a peak for you.
4. Between each toe. Spread each toe and take a look in between for any nicked skin, signs of infection, cuts, redness, blisters etc.
5. Run your hands through every part of your feet, top and bottom, front and back, feeling for anything that is not right.
6. Repeat Repeat this ritual every night and to each foot. If you find any injury to the skin, get care right away. Numb feet become sick very quickly and very easily and it can lead to severe pain and disability and even loss of limb or life!
